RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team was defeated by the Seattle U Redhawks Sunday, 4-3, in a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) match at Kiskeya Athletics.
UTRGV (8-13, 0-2 WAC) looked dominant in doubles to claim the early 1-0 lead. On Court One, the team of senior captain
Emilien Burnel and freshman
Ivo Isqueiro stayed perfect in WAC play with a quick 6-1 victory, using their big serves and balanced attack to cruise. The freshmen duo of
Paolo Bonaguro and
Will Roberts clinched the doubles point with a strong 6-2 win at No. 3.
Burnel took the first set in the No. 1 singles match, but the Redhawks took the opener on the second, third and fourth courts. Seattle U evened the match at 1-1 with a win on the second singles court.
Burnel improved to 2-0 in WAC play with a strong close on the top court. He took a good 6-3, 6-2 win to make it 2-1 Vaqueros with his quickness and strong serving on full display. Seattle U took a 3-2 lead with wins on the fourth and third courts.
Roberts rolled in the start of his No. 6 match despite the lengthy break after doubles. He took a 6-2 win in the first set as he painted the edges and played strong on the baseline. But the Redhawks clinched the victory with a win at No. 5.
Roberts earned his second WAC win with a battle in the second set. He went back-and-forth with
Yu Han Hsieh and forced a tiebreaker at 6-6, continuing to fight even with the team victory secured. Roberts took the second 7-6 (7:5) to stay perfect in conference play on the sixth court.
UTRGV will play a late season non-conference match Wednesday at 5:30 at #41 Arkansas.
