RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros head men's basketball coach
Kahil Fennell announced on Friday the addition of forward
Tommy Gankhuyag for the 2024-25 academic year.
Gankhuyag spent his freshman season at Trevecca Nazarene where he played in 25 games and made 19 starts. Gankhuyag averaged 11.5 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 56.7% (118-of-208) from the floor, 37.5% (21-of-56) from three-point range, and 65.2% (30-of-46) from the free throw line.
"Tommy is coming to us from a high-level Division II program with Trevecca Nazarene," Fennell said. "He experienced some success there and was a really productive freshman. To have that kind of productivity and impact as a freshman speaks to his ability and what he is capable of. He's got a terrific pedigree. He's played at a high level in high school, college and internationally as well. We are really excited about what he can bring for us."
In high school, Gankhuyag helped Centerville High School reach the 2022-23 Ohio High School Athletic Association State Semifinals. He played AAU basketball for Team Midwest helping them reach the Ohio Final Four.
Gankhuyag, originally from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, played for the Mongolian Team at the FISU World University Games in the summer of 2023.
Gankhuyag joins forwards
Kwo Agwa,
Marshal Destremau and guards
Trey Miller,
DK Thorn,
K.T. Raimey, and
Cliff Davis as part of Coach Fennell's first signing class.
