ST. CHARLES, Missouri – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team opened their 2024 season with a 2-0 win over the Lindenwood University Lions on Sunday at Hunter Stadium.
After a first half where the Vaqueros put the pressure on the Lions (0-1-1), the Vaqueros (1-0-0) get one on the board in the 61
st minute. UTRGV, who had the man advantage after a red card, continued to put the pressure in the second half as senior
Cesar Baltazar sent a cross into the box where senior
Jason Robles headed it home for the 1-0 lead.

Kgodiso Sukati connected with sophomore
Jaime Carrillo, who was streaking up the pitch. Carrillo found himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Enzo Gil poking it into the goal for the 2-0 UTRGV advantage.
Late in the match, the Lions converted on a penalty kick that made it 2-1 but freshman
Pablo Torre put the finishing touches on the scoring in the 86
th minute. Torre received the pass from senior
Oneeko Allen at the top of the box and put it into the right corner of the goal for his first-career goal.
Sophomore
Fernando Carreon (1-0) made eight saves, four in the first half and four more in the second, for his first career win.
