RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team earned its first win of the season, 1-0, with a solid offensive effort against the Southern Jaguars Thursday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
UTRGV (1-2-1) took the lead in the 57
th minute on a goal by sophomore midfielder
Linnea Eld. After applying heavy pressure the entire match, the Vaqueros offense created the space it needed to break through on the 14
th shot of the night. Senior midfielder
Sam Maudsley tapped a pass through two defenders to find Eld at the top of the box, and the sophomore sent a hard shot to the left corner of the net by a diving defender. Maudsley picked up the assist.
Freshman goalkeeper
Heiddis Sigurdardottir earned a clean sheet making one save against four shots faced. She got plenty of help from the Vaqueros offense dominating possession and sound defense when Southern did find some rhythm. The Jaguars didn't take their first shot of the match until the 53
rd minute.
Senior defender
Libby Beilfuss and Eld each put two shots on goal to pace UTRGV. Redshirt junior
Savannah Frisby, sophomore defender
Rosie Train and senior defender
Abbie Bailey kept the offense attacking steadily. The Vaqueros racked up nine shots in the first half and outshot Southern 19-4. They put six shots on goal and kept pushing to the final minute.
Southern's goalkeeper,
Sydney Bellamy, put forth an impressive effort for the Jaguars (0-5). She faced a barrage of shots and made five saves.
