CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team saw another freshman earn his first collegiate win Saturday as play continued at the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Courts in Corpus Christi. 
 
Loic Young Kriegel picked up a 6-4, 6-2 victory in the singles Orange West stage, defeating Marco Rodriguez from Incarante Word. Young will play the 5-6 match in the Orange bracket Sunday at 12 p.m. against Lukas Hamacher of Lamar. 
 
Sophomore Paolo Bonaguro captured two good wins Saturday. He started the day teaming up with sophomore Will Roberts to defeat Abilene Christian's duo of Alejandro Verdasco and Merse Deli 6-3 in the doubles Blue West stage. Bonaguro/Roberts will look to keep rolling Sunday at 9 a.m. when they face Lamar's Haruki Omori-Cowie/Guy Daganin the 5-6 match of the top doubles draw. 
 
Bonaguro competed against Guy Saturday, earning a sound 6-3, 6-2 win when they met in the West stage of the Purple singles draw. 
 
UTRGV's doubles team of sophomore Santiago Serrano and freshman Eduardo Menezes competed well in the Green Semifinal match, pushing Rice's Petro Kuzmenok/Gabriel Porras to extra games, but the Owls duo took the 7-5 win. 
 
Freshman Isaac Smyth pushed his singles Yellow Semifinal match to a 10-point tiebreaker in the third frame, but Porras took the 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-2) win. Serrano, Roberts and freshman Brownsville St. Joseph alum Francisco Gamez also competed hard in three-set matches in their respective singles draw but didn't come out on top. 
 
The Vaqueros wrap up play in their first tournament of the fall Sunday starting at 9 a.m.
