HOUSTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team fell 1-0 to the Houston Christian (HCU) Huskies in a non-conference match Wednesday at Sorrels Field.
UTRGV (2-2-1) played tough defensively before giving up the game winner in the 78' to HCU's
Ryan Okerayi. HCU (2-4-2) outshot the Vaqueros nine to seven and had five shots on goal to UTRGV's three.
The first half ended scoreless as the Vaqueros and Huskies played sound defensively. Only five shots were attempted in the first half with UTRGV outshooting the Huskies three to two but the Huskies taking the shots on goal advantage two to zero. The Huskies had the only corner of the half. Sophomore
Fernando Carreon ended the half with two saves.
The Vaqueros best look came on a centering pass that junior
Kgodiso Sukati received and hit a screamer just missing the right side of the net.
The Huskies came out the break aggressive but were met with a wall of orange as the Vaqueros refused to give up a goal in early in the second. The Huskies had four of their eight second half shots in the first 11 minutes.
The Vaqueros upped the intensity after HCU's goal in the 78' and received two corner opportunities in the 79' and 80' minute but could not find the net on those opportunities. Sophomore
Jaime Carrillo found an opening and ripped a shot on goal, but it was gathered by the HCU keeper in the 85'.
A minute later, the Vaqueros had two shots with one on goal by sophomore
Cade Erickson and the HCU keeper deflected the final shot attempt for UTRGV.
Carreon finished the night with five saves. Carillo, Erickson, and freshman
Pablo Torre had two shots apiece.
UTRGV will continue their road trip as they take on Oral Roberts on Saturday at 7 p.m.
