KINGSVILLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team had a good start to the Javelina Jam Friday by stacking up seven wins across singles and doubles competition. 
 
A pair of newcomers sophomore Madeleine Joffe and sophomore Hitakamya Narwal shined in the singles Blueberry Draw, winning both of their matches Friday to reach the draw championship. 
 
Joffe battled from behind in her matches against Angelo State's Elise Gillis and Prairie View A&M's Daniela Garcia, showing her fight to win after dropping the first set. She defeated Gillis 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10:3) in the quarterfinals and bested Garcia 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10:7) in the semis. Narwal also had to come from behind in her quarterfinals match against Texas A&M-Kingsville's Annalena Noll and took a hard-fought 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (14:12) victory. In the semis, she showed that same competitive fire to come out on top of a tight match, 7-5, 7-6 (7:4) over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Yana Mykytyn. 
 
Sophomore McAllen High alum Giuliana Castelain reached the championship of the singles Peach Draw after recording a good 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10:7) win over Kaitlin Blount from TAMUK. She'll face Angelo State's Ivet Stancheva at 12 p.m. for the draw title. 
 
Freshman Luna Buijtenhuijs defeated Andrea Landaeta from TAMUK 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the Apricot Draw for her first collegiate victory. She'll compete in the 3-4 playoff at 12 p.m. against TAMUK's Annika Gomez. 
 
Action continues Saturday as the Vaqueros get started at 9 a.m. with doubles at the TAMUK Recreational Complex.
