RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team won in convincing fashion, 5-0 over the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets Friday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
UTRGV (2-2-1) took the lead in the 37
th minute when the freshmen duo of
Jordan Matthews and
Krystin Moore connected on a cross for Matthews' first career goal and Moore's first career assist.
After creating plenty of opportunities in the first half, taking nine shots with three on goal, the Vaqueros capitalized in the second half, scoring four goals, including two in the 53
rd minute.
Senior
Abbie Bailey celebrated senior night with a goal off a penalty kick, her first of the season after a handball was called on Howard Payne (2-0) inside the box.
Less than a minute later, senior
Libby Beilfuss connected on a cross to freshman
Lisa Elowsson who waited to see the goalie's reaction before burying the shot in the bottom left corner.
In the 74
th minute, junior
Olivia Trotter scored her first goal with UTRGV on a nice entrance pass from redshirt junior
Savannah Frisby. Trotter split the defense and pushed the ball into the bottom right corner just past the outstretched arms of the goalie.
Four minutes later, Frisby scored her second goal of the season after advancing the ball from midfield all the way to the box and sending a hard shot into the top left corner.
The Vaqueros outshot the Yellow Jackets 26-2 with a 17-0 advantage in shots on goal.
