COMMERCE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team went toe-to-toe with the Texas A&M Lions but fell 1-0 on Thursday at Lion Soccer Field.
The Vaqueros (5-10-2, 2-6-1 SLC) and the Lions (7-6-4, 4-4-1 SLC) were engaged in a hard-fought battle as both teams made a pair of saves in the first half to keep the match scoreless.
With Southland Conference tournament implications, both teams came out of the half with a sense of urgency. Each team put a couple of shots on goal in the first 15 minutes of the second half but in the 64
th minute, the Lions were able to put one home as Elaina Flores found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
The Vaqueros turned their urgency up a notch in the last 15 minutes as they dominated possession. The Vaqueros took seven shots in the last 15 minutes coming close on multiple attempts, but the Lions defense held strong to seal the match.
The Vaqueros outshot the Lions 22 to 12 and 6 to 5 on goal. Juniors
