RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team closed out their season with a 3-1 victory over the Lamar University Cardinals on Thursday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The Vaqueros (6-10-2, 3-6-1 SLC) game out with energy in the first half and didn't waste much time to get on the board against the Cardinals (6-7-5, 3-3-4 SLC).
Graduate student
Savannah Frisby had the ball in the box, dribbled around the defenders and hit a screamer past Lamar goalkeeper Maddie Rich for her sixth goal of the season giving the Vaqueros the 1-0 lead just four minutes into the match.
The Vaqueros weren't done in the first half as sophomore
Erika Parker took a shot from the top of the box, which was saved by Rich, but freshman
Sienna Church was there to clean up the rebound and put it into the back of the net for her third goal of the season making it 2-0 UTRGV in the 20
th minute.
The UTRGV defense made things difficult for the Cardinals limiting them to just three shots in the half while the Vaqueros took seven shots with five on goal.
In the second half, the Vaqueros kept the pressure on the Cardinals. Coming off a corner kick, graduate student
Abbie Bailey found a loose ball and hit a laser over Rich's outstretched hand for her first goal of the season extending UTRGV's lead to 3-0.
UTRGV's defense didn't allow much to the Cardinals but they did get their lone goal in the 80
th minute when Erin Dull got a pass off a corner and just snuck it across the line for the goal
UTRGV put up eight shots with six of them on goal while the Cardinals were limited to a total of five shots and three on goal.
Junior
Emilia Compian finished the match with one save in the match while getting help from the back line to complete the win.
