Women's Soccer Takes Down First Place Incarnate Word

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team won its second-straight Southland Conference match, beating the first place Incarnate Word Cardinals 1-0 on Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

In the opening minutes of the second half, sophomore Lisa Elowsson took control of pass from the backfield near the right sideline. She took the ball to the right side of the box and sent a cross in front of the goal, where sophomore Isabella Burtini settled the ball with her left foot and then used her right foot to send the ball over the sliding Hannah Alexander (4-4-3) into the net to put the Vaqueros (5-7-1, 2-3-0 SLC) up 1-0.

The Vaqueros outshot the Cardinals (4-5-3, 2-1-2 SLC) 12-to-10, including 6-to-4 on goal. A trio of Vaqueros had two shots on goal, including Burtini, graduate student Savannah Frisby, and freshman Sienna Church.

Junior Emilia Compian (5-6-0) made four saves for her fourth shutout of the season.

UTRGV plays its next two matches on the road starting Thursday at 7 p.m. at McNeese on ESPN+.
