NACOGDOCHES – (RV) The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros football team fell to the #23 Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks 41-17 on Saturday at Homer Bryce Stadium.
Down 27-0 at the start of the third quarter, the Vaqueros (6-3, 2-3 SLC) embarked on a 13-play, 54-yard drive spanning over seven minutes, capped by a field goal by sophomore
Brysen Gardner, to get on the board.
The Lumberjacks (7-2, 5-0 SLC) responded with a 9-play, 58-yard drive that ended in a 6-yard touchdown catch by
Kylon Harris to make the score 34-3.
The Vaqueros answered back by driving 72 yards over the final 3:40 of the quarter, ending the frame with freshman
Tony Diaz hauling in a 2-yard touchdown pass with one hand to make the score 34-10.
Diaz finished with six receptions for 62 yards. Senior Sharyland Pioneer alum
Eddie Lee Marburger went 16-for-24 for 115 yards and one touchdown.
Defensively, freshman
Jaiden Haygood recorded 11 tackles (five solo). Junior
TJ Neal finished with nine tackles (six solo) while graduate student
Spencer Rich finished with nine tackles (three solo).
After Diaz's touchdown, the 'Jacks put together a nearly 8-minute drive spanning 16 plays, including a pair of fourth down conversions, to advance 75 yards, capped by a
Clayton Wayland 10-yard receiving touchdown to put the 'Jacks up 41-10.
On the Vaqueros' final possession, freshman
Aidan Jakobsohn orchestrated a 6-play, 51-yard drive that ended with Jakobsohn rushed six yard to his left and dove for the pylon to bring the Vaqueros within 41-17.
On their opening drive, the 'Jacks drove 80 yards on eight plays, capped by
Gavin Rutherford rushing through the middle for a 1-yard touchdown, to go up 7-0.
Then, after an interception, the 'Jacks advanced 23 yards on nine plays to setup a 30-yard field goal by
Carlos Alvarado to make the score 10-0.
On the 'Jacks' next drive, they advanced 57 yards across 13 plays, including a 1-yard rushing touchdown by
Jaylen Jenkins, to make the score 17-0.
The 'Jacks opened the second quarter with a 13-play, 96-yard drive that ended in a 9-yard touchdown catch by
Clayton Wayland to make the score 24-0.
UTRGV hosts 2023 Southland Conference Champion Nicholls on Saturday, Nov. 8 at
5 p.m. at Robert & Janet Vackar Stadium.

12 p.m. The Vaqueros Walk is at
2:45 p.m. in the H-E-B Tailgate Zone followed by a pep rally in the amphitheater. Fans do not need a game ticket to access Vaqueros Game Day or the tailgating areas.
