Men's Basketball Falls on the Road at Boise State

BOISE, Idaho – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team fell 85-65 to the Boise State University Broncos on Tuesday at ExtraMile Arena to close out their three-game road trip to start the season.

The Vaqueros (1-2) were led by junior Koree Cotton, who scored 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Sophomore Jaylen Washington added nine points on 3-of-4 shooting with three steals. Graduate student Marvin McGhee III scored nine points.

The Broncos (2-1) had four in double-figures with Andrew Meadow leading the way with 21 points. Javan Buchanan scored 15 points with seven rebounds. Dylan Andrews added 12 points with four assists and Spencer Ahrens scored 11 points with six rebounds.

The Vaqueros got off to a good start jumping out to a 4-0 lead after a layup by junior Filip Brankovic and a couple of free throws from McGhee III, but the Broncos (1-1) came right back with a three-pointer and a jumper from Meadow.

Cotton gave the Vaqueros the lead once again with a three-pointer and then a layup but a 5-0 run highlighted by a three-point play from Buchanan gave the Broncos the lead at 11-9.

After a layup from senior Kye Dickson tied the game at 13-13, the Broncos put together a 22-12 run to take the 35-25 lead that saw the Broncos get six-straight points from the free throw line. Freshman Julien Gomez knocked down a three-pointer to get the Vaqueros within 42-34 as the Broncos took the lead into the locker room.

McGhee III got going early in the second half as he opened the scoring with a layup and then later knocked down a three-pointer to get UTRGV within 52-45. The Broncos answered with a 6-0 run to push their lead back to 58-45.

Washington tried to ignite the Vaqueros as he knocked down a three-pointer and then recorded a steal and knocked down a couple of free throws to get the Vaqueros within 67-58 with 7:31 to play but the Broncos put that fire out with a 10-0 run capped by a three-pointer from Buchanan that put the game out of reach.
