Men's Basketball Thrills 2,019 Fans in Home Opening Win Over Southwestern Adventist

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball defeated the Southwestern Adventist University Knights 110-53 in front of 2,019 fans on Monday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
 
The Vaqueros (2-2) had five players in double-figure scoring while having 12 different scorers and shared the ball with 28 assists and just seven turnovers. Junior Koree Cotton led all UTRGV scorers with 18 points, three rebounds, and three steals. Sophomore Dane Christensen recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Jaylen Washington scored a career-high 14 points and five assists. Senior Kye Dickson scored 12 points with nine rebounds and graduate student Marvin McGhee III added 10 points.
 
The Knights (3-1) were led by Ruben Doria, who scored 19 points on 5-of-13 from the floor. Andre Mancilla Guajardo added 12 points with three rebounds. 
 
The Vaqueros got things rolling right out of the gate scoring the first 13 points of the game behind six points from Dickson. Washington knocked down a three-pointer and then found room in the paint making a layup to extend UTRGV's lead to 18-3.
 
Later in the half, freshman Julien Gomez knocked down one of his two first half three-pointers to make it 33-10 in favor of the Vaqueros. After the Knights got back-to-back three-pointers from Ruben Doria that got them within 40-21, Cotton sparked an 18-9 run to close out the half as he finished the half with 11 points. 
 
UTRGV shot 51% from the floor and 42% from beyond the arc taking the 58-30 lead into the half. 
 
Marvin McGhee III got the scoring started for the Vaqueros in the second half, which kick started a 10-0 run that also saw Cotton make a layup and hit a three with the run being capped by a Dickson dunk. 
 
The Knights went on an 8-0 to get within 68-41 with 14:31 left to play but the Vaqueros answered right back as Winters knocked down a three-pointer to start a 16-2 run. Later in the half, Christensen scored 10 straight points to extend the Vaqueros lead to 102-51 to put an exclamation point on the game. 
 
The Vaqueros shot 53% from the floor throughout the game while finishing the game 17-of-46 beyond the arc for 47%. 
 
The Vaqueros are back on the road when they visit Missouri State on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Great Southern Bank Arena.
