FORT WORTH – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team was defeated 93–57 at No. 10 Texas Christian University (TCU) Horned Frogs in a non-conference battle at Schollmaier Arena.
Freshman forward
Chazlyn Dettor led UTRGV (3-3) in scoring with a career-high 17 points with four rebounds in her first collegiate start. Dettor was followed by junior guard
Erin Maguire with 14 points along with five assists, and one rebound. Sophomore guard
Kayla Lorenz added 10 points alongside two assists and one rebound.
TCU (6-0) had four Horned Frogs score in double digits, led by
Marta Suarez with 24 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists.
Olivia Miles added 22 points with eight rebounds and seven assists,
Taylor Bigby scored 12, and junior
Donovyn Hunter had 11. Both Suarez and Miles shot 56% from the field, while Suarez shot 6 of 10 from beyond the arc.
TCU opened the game on an 18-0 run before Maguire scored the first bucket of the game for UTRGV. Sophomore
Elizabeth Romer hit back-to-back three pointers and Lorenz added one of her own to make it 22-11.
UTRGV kept pace with solid runs that brought them to their closest deficit in the second quarter. The Vaqueros went on a 18-9 run to start the quarter and cut the lead to 39-33. TCU ended the half on a 7-0 run.
In the third quarter, UTRGV once again cut the lead to single digits after back-to-back buckets by Dettor brought it to 55-46. TCU ended the third quarter on a 14-0 run.
In the fourth quarter, Dettor scored six of the Vaqueros 11 points as TCU pulled away using their 24-11 advantage.
The Vaqueros will remain on the road for their next contest as they open Southland Conference play at Lamar on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 6:30 p.m.
