BEAUMONT, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team dropped its Southland Conference (SLC) opener Tuesday, 67-59, to the Lamar Cardinals at the Montagne Center.
Freshman forward
Chazlyn Dettor and junior guard
Jalayah Ingram scored 17 points each to pace UTRGV (3-4, 0-1 SLC) offensively. Ingram was a career-high 13-for-17 from the free throw line, tying the fifth-most made free throws in a game in program history and matching the second-most attempts. She also had six rebounds and five assists. Dettor matched her career-high with her second consecutive 17-point game and had six rebounds. Sophomore guard
Kayla Lorenz scored 10 points. Senior forward
Charlotte O'Keefe brought in 12 rebounds and had three blocks and three steals.
Jacei Denley led Lamar (3-4, 1-0 SLC) with 15 points and had four steals.
Kamryn Wilson and
Solenne Olenga scored 13 points each while Olenga had 10 rebounds for a double-double.
The first quarter foreshadowed how tight of a game would be played Tuesday night. Both teams missed some shots early as the defenses set the tone. Lamar opened up a 12-5 lead, then the Vaqueros locked things up and held the Cardinals scoreless for five minutes during a 9-0 run. Dettor scored six in the stretch and the Vaqueros were 6-for-8 from the line to have the game knotted at 14-14.
Lamar kept the Vaqueros scoreless for the first five minutes of the second quarter, but UTRGV's defense was stingy, too, and didn't let the Cardinals get too far out of reach. Junior forward
Ivy Brown completed a good three-point play late in the frame to get UTRGV within three, but a last second jumper by Denley sent Lamar to to the locker room with a 27-22 advantage.
The Vaqueros shot just 25% from the field in the first half but was 10-of-13 from the charity stripe to keep things close.
UTRGV controlled the third quarter, outscoring the Cardinals 22-15 with incredible defense late in the quarter. Lorenz drilled the first UTRGV three-pointer aided by solid ball movement to break the press to get the run started. O'Keefe and sophomore guard
Gianna Angiolet recorded steals on consecutive possessions that let to a pair of trips to the charity stripe for Ingram. Lorenz nailed her second three to tie the game at 38-38 after a 9-0 run for UTRGV. Lorenz had eight points in the third after adding a layup to send the Vaqueros to the fourth with a 44-42 lead.
Lamar opened the fourth with a 12-1 run to get control as UTRGV's shooting woes returned. The Cardinals drained back-to-back threes to build a 13 point lead, but the Vaqueros kept fighting. They made some defensive stops and scored six unanswered to get within 62-58 after a three from Angiolet with 47 seconds remaining. But the Cardinals were efficient at the line as UTRGV was forced to foul to secure the win.
