Matthew Cavazos Moves into Assistant Director of Athletics Communications Role

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Monday that Matthew Cavazos is now an assistant director of athletic communications, serving as the primary media contact for the men's soccer, women's swimming & diving, and men's and women's tennis programs.

Cavazos, who started at UTRGV as an informational writer for the UTRGV Newsroom in July 2023 before being promoted to multimedia journalist ahead of the 2024-25 academic year, will also assist with projects that include alumni outreach such as the Hall of Fame and Varsity Club.

"We're excited to have Matt join athletics in a full-time capacity," UTRGV Senior Associate Athletic Director for Communications & Championships Jonah Goldberg said. "Matt has been a key member of two teams for the last two and a half years and I am proud of how much he grew in each role. His time with athletics and the newsroom has made Matt a very well-rounded employee that we know we can count on in important situations."

During his first two and a half years at UTRGV, Cavazos has served as a project manager for several athletics projects, including the creation of microsites such as RallyTheValley.com and GoUTRGV.com/VAF. He has also been the women's swimming & diving media contact since the program returned and assisted as the media contact for the tennis programs this past fall.

Cavazos has served in a variety of game day roles, assisting with statistics and record keeping, writing recaps, clipping highlights, monitoring field access for the media at football, and assisting with the ESPN+ broadcasts in roles ranging from camera operator to replay operator.

"I am extremely excited and appreciative of this incredible opportunity," Cavazos said. "My gratitude goes to [UTRGV Senior Vice President and Director of Athletics] Chasse Conque and [UTRGV Vice President of Marketing and Communications] Patrick Gonzales, and Jonah Goldberg for their continued support and mentorship. I look forward to advancing the UTRGV brand alongside our incredible team."

A graduate of Texas Tech, Cavazos previously worked as a student employee for Texas Tech Broadcast Services and as a production intern with the Southern Illinois Miners in the summer of 2021. He also interned with UTRGV University Marketing and Communications in the summer of 2022.
