RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team fell, 110-45, to the #2 Texas Longhorns in a non-conference game Wednesday in front of 5,984 fans at Bert Ogden Arena.
Junior guard
Jalayah Ingram led UTRGV (3-5, 0-1 Southland Conference) with 13 points and had another big day at the free throw line, going 9-for-9 while bringing in seven rebounds and collecting five assists. Sophomore guard
Gianna Angiolet scored a season-high tying 12 points, knocking down a trio of three-pointers while dishing out five assists. Sophomore guard
Kayla Lorenz went 4-for-6 from three and contributed 12 points.
Madison Booker paced Texas (11-0, 0-0 Southeastern Conference) with 28 points and was 14-for-19 from the field with 10 rebounds and 10 assists for the triple double.
Justice Carlton added 21 points with nine rebounds and the Longhorns got 15 points each from
Breya Cunningham and
Kyla Oldacre. Rori Harmon recorded 14 assists and four steals.
UTRGV was sharp from behind the arc to stay close in the opening minutes of the game. Lorenz and Angiolet drained three-pointers as UTRGV's solid ball movement opened up looks, putting the Vaqueros within 10-7. The Texas defense held the Vaqueros to 25% shooting from the field in the opening quarter while the Longhorns used a full-court press and physical defense to force some turnovers and open up a 21-9 lead. Lorenz hit her second three late in the first, but Texas held a 33-12 advantage after the opening 10 minutes of play.
Angiolet showed her court vision to dish out a good assist to freshman forward
Chazlyn Dettor, who beat her defender under the hoop to get UTRGV on the board to start the second quarter. Angiolet and Ingram sank pull-up jumpers in the second quarter, but the Longhorns played tight defense and took a 70-20 lead to the locker room at halftime.
UTRGV matched Texas in scoring in the third quarter as both teams produced 13 points. The Vaqueros were sound in their half-court defensive setup and solid on the boards, bringing in 12 rebounds to create opportunities. UTRGV went on a 7-0 run midway through the frame with good shooting at the charity stripe and continued to knock down shots from deep behind the sharp shooting of Lorenz and Angiolet. A late bucket from Texas had the #2 team in the country leading 83-33 heading to the final quarter.
Angiolet and Ingram powered UTRGV to a solid fourth quarter, showing good fight to battle to the very end. Ingram drove fearlessly to the hoop and earned trips to the charity stripe, including on a good basket through contact to earn a three-point play. Lorenz kissed a three off the glass for her fourth from deep, but Texas closed the game on a 9-0 run to extend the lead.
The Vaqueros will play their next three on the road, starting with conference game Monday at Stephen F. Austin at 6 p.m.
