RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Tuesday that the Vaqueros football team will visit UTSA for a game in the Alamodome on Sept. 5, 2026.
 
"Playing on the road against an NCAA Division I FBS American Athletic Conference opponent like UTSA gives us an opportunity to gain exposure for UTRGV and the Rio Grande Valley and engage our considerable San Antonio alumni base while playing a regional opponent gives our fans an easy opportunity to travel for a road game," UTRGV Senior Vice President and Director of Athletics Chasse Conque said. "Not only is this the first game against an FBS opponent in program history, it's against a team that was in a similar position to us just 14 years ago. We look forward to the opportunity that this game presents and we appreciate UTSA working with us to make this happen."
 
UTSA Ties
 
UTRGV head coach Travis Bush was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at UTSA from 2010-12, coaching the inaugural team during the 2011 season. Joining Bush on the coaching staff that season was his current offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, Jeff Bowen, who was a graduate assistant coach at UTSA from 2011-13.
 
UTRGV Director of Football Operations & Administration John Simmons was a quarterback on the inaugural UTSA team, playing the position from 2010-12 before shifting to wide receiver in 2013. He then became a football operations intern during the spring of his senior year.
 
Future Games
 
This is the first game to be announced as part of the 2026 schedule, which will feature 12 games, including three non-conference games and a nine-game, full round robin Southland slate.
 
UTRGV has already announced two non-conference games in 2027, including a home game against Texas A&M-Kingsville (Sept. 4) and a road game at Texas State (Sept. 11). UTRGV has also announced a trip to Texas State on Sept. 14, 2030.
