Women's Basketball Secures South Texas Showdown Sweep With Win Over Islanders

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team secured the season sweep in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, by defeating rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (AMCC) Islanders, 56-37, Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.

Senior guard Tierra Trotter set two career highs as she tallied a game-high 12 rebounds and dished out a game-high eight assists. Freshman guard Kayla Lorenz led UTRGV (11-12, 6-6 Southland Conference) with a game-high 15 points as she matched her career high with five three-pointers. Graduate student forward Chynell Mitchell added 10 points and six rebounds. Junior forward Charlotte O'Keefe dished out a season-high five assists to go with nine rebounds, six points and a career-high tying four blocks. Graduate student G/F Kade Hackerott tabbed 11 rebounds and scored seven points.

Jaeda Whitner led the Islanders (11-11, 3-8 SLC) with nine points while Paige Allen scored eight. Nabaweeyah McGill led AMCC with eight rebounds.

With a rowdy 956 Day crowd of 1,761 bringing the energy, the Vaqueros started the game on a 14-0 run and kept the Islanders from scoring for the first eight minutes of the game. Lorenz scored nine points in the first quarter and knocked down a pair of three-pointers to help UTRGV lead 15-2 heading to the second quarter.

The script was flipped in the second quarter as the Islanders kept UTRGV scoreless for nearly three minutes while going on a 9-0 run. Good rebounding and a three-pointer from freshman guard Sophia Zufelt grew the lead, but the Islanders trimmed it to four again. Both offenses went quiet for the final two minutes of the half and the Vaqueros took a 23-17 lead to the locker room.

UTRGV outscored Corpus 22-8 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. Mitchell scored six quick points with good moves in the paint and O'Keefe knocked down a three-pointer to fire up the Vaqueros. Sophomore guard Madison Huhn drained two threes as UTRGV rolled in the frame and finished the game with a season-high tying eight points.

The offenses were quiet in the fourth, but UTRGV's rebounding prowess still helped grow the advantage to 23 points.

Up next the Vaqueros will play Stephen F. Austin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in Nacogdoches.
