LAREDO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's golf team is back in action this week when they compete at the Border Olympics, hosted by the University of Houston, starting on Monday at Laredo Country Club.
The 54-hole event will feature 36 holes on Monday with the final 18 holes being played on Tuesday.
Laredo Country Club plays 7,375 yards and is a par 72.
The Competition
There will be a 16-team field that will include UTRGV, host Houston, Augusta, Houston Christian, Illinois State, Lamar, Lipscomb, Louisiana, Miami (OH), Michigan, New Mexico State, Rice, Sam Houston, Troy, ULM, and Wright State.

Last Time Out
The Vaqueros opened the spring at the Vaqueros Intercollegiate where they finished tied for 10
th with a three-round score of 912. UTRGV posted rounds of 309, 304, and 299 as they finished tied with Wichita State.
Esteban Gonzalez led the way as he finished tied for 16
th with a three-round score of 221. Gonzalez used rounds of 77, 68, and 76.
Taj Sutherland finished tied for 42
nd with a three-round score of 230 with rounds of 79, 76, and 75.
Arthit Kruaprayong finished tied for 46
th with a three-round score of 231 after posting rounds of 74, 86, and 71.
Eddie Lai finished tied for 52
nd with a three-round score of 234 with rounds of 80, 79, and 75.
Emilio Gil Leyva and
Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque finished tied for 54
th with three-round scores of 235.
Last Year at Border Olympics
UTRGV did not compete at last year's but did finish in 16
th place in 2023.
In last year's Border Olympics, Illinois State won the team title with a three-round score of 832 after posting rounds of 280, 273, and 279. The top 11 teams each finished under par.
Illinois State's Valentin Peugnet won the individual title with a three-round score 199 after carding rounds of 68, 64, and 67.
