THIBODAUX, La. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team fell 93-84 to the Nicholls Colonels on Saturday at the David R. Stopher Gymnasium.

The Vaqueros (14-14, 6-11 SLC) had a pair score 20 or more points with senior Cliff Davis leading all scorer with 23 points and redshirt junior Howie Fleming Jr. scoring 20 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Senior Kwo Agwa added 15 points with nine rebounds and junior Trey Miller and graduate student DK Thorn each added nine points.

The Colonels (17-11, 11-6 SLC) had four players in double-figure scoring with Jamal West Jr. leading the way with 22 points. Michael Gray Jr. added 21 points. Rob Brown III scored 19 points Jaylen Searles added 12 points.

The Vaqueros took the lead in the early minutes behind the three-pointer as Davis and Fleming Jr. knocked down a pair to open the scoring. Another Davis three-pointer kick started a 13-0 run for the Vaqueros as they took the 21-7 lead.

A three-pointer from redshirt sophomore Marshal Destremau made it 33-20 and then a jumper from Miller gave UTRGV their largest lead of the half at 35-21 but the Colonels closed out the half on a 15-0 run to take the 36-35 lead into halftime.

UTRGV opened the second half with six-straight points getting layups from Thorn, Agwa and Davis but it was back-and-forth for most of the second half as the Colonels got within 48-46 after a pair of free throws from West. Fleming Jr. knocked down a three-pointer to push UTRGV's lead to 51-46.

Later in the half, Davis knocked down a three-pointer that made it 55-50 but the Colonels got jumpers from Gray and Searles before another three-pointer from Davis made it 58-54. The Colonels then went on a 14-8 run to take the lead for good.

The Vaqueros made 12 three-pointers in the game and held the lead for almost 75% of the game.

The Vaqueros are back in action on Monday when they visit McNeese at 6 p.m. at the Legacy Center.
