SAN MARCOS – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team dropped its match Sunday, 7-0, to the Texas State Bobcats at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
UTRGV's top doubles duo of sophomore
Rhea Makesar and freshman
Mariia Bakhtina improved to 5-0 in the No. 1 flight with a solid 6-2 win. But Texas State (7-2) captured wins on the second and third courts to claim the 1-0 lead.
The Bobcats took five of six first sets as singles got underway to gain control of the match. With wins in the first, sixth and fourth flights, Texas State secured the team victory, but the Vaqueros (2-3) continued to fight.
Makesar played tough in singles, pushing both sets to a tiebreaker as she gave
Callie Creath all she could handle. But Creath came up big in the extra frames and took a 7-6 (7:4), 7-6 (7:2) win over Makesar.
Bakhtina fought for a 7-5 win in the first set on court five, but she retired in the third, giving
Ireland Simme the win. Sophomore
Madeleine Joffe was also competitive in the No. 3 flight but a big second set locked up a win for
Sofia Fortuno.
The Vaqueros will be back in action Saturday in the Southland Conference (SLC) opener against Southeastern at 1 p.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center. Admission is free and the public is encouraged to attend.
