PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico – Sophomore Esteban Gonzalez climbed 30 spots in the standings to move into the top-10 to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's golf team in the second round of the Vaqueros Intercollegiate on Monday at Playa Paraiso Golf Club.
 
Gonzalez, a McAllen Memorial alum, posted a four-under par 68 in the second round and is tied for 10^th place after sitting tied for 40^th after the first round. Gonzalez sits with a two-round score of 145 and is just seven strokes off the lead held by SMU's Zachary Kingsland. 
 
Redshirt senior Taj Sutherland improved by three strokes with a second round 76 and sits tied for 47^th with a two-round score of 155. Sophomore Emilio Gil Leyva and senior Juan Luis de Bethenncourt Duque are tied for 56^th through two rounds with a two-round score of 158. Gil Leyva carded a second round 80 while Duque improved by four strokes with a 77. 
 
Sophomore Eddie Lai is tied for 62^nd with a two-round score of 159 after posting a second round 79 and junior Arthit Kruaprayong is tied for 67^th with a two-round score of 160 after a second round 86. 
 
As a team, the Vaqueros improved by five strokes to post a second round 304 for a two-score total of 613. SMU and UTEP are tied for the team lead with two-round scores of 573. 
 
The Vaqueros will be back on the course for the final round on Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
