Men's Basketball Falls in Heartbreaker at Lamar

BEAUMONT – After fighting back from as many as 11 points and tying the game with 1.5 seconds on the clock, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team fell 70-68 on a last second shot by the Lamar University Cardinals on Saturday at Neches Arena at the Montagne Center. 
 
The Vaqueros (13-11, 5-8 SLC) got a pair of clutch free throws from redshirt junior Howie Fleming Jr. to tie the game at 68-68 but the Cardinals (14-10, 9-4 SLC) sent a full-court pass that ricocheted off the backboard and found its way into the hands of Andrew Holifield, who made the game-winner. 
 
Fleming Jr. led the Vaqueros with a season-high 19 points on season-high tying four three-pointers with eight rebounds and five assists. Fifth year K.T. Raimey finished the night with 13 points on 4-of-6 from three. Senior Cliff Davis scored 12 points on four three-pointers and graduate student DK Thorn added 10 points with seven rebounds. 
 
The Cardinals had four in double-figure scoring as Alexis Marmolejos scored 19 points Errol White scored 14 points with eight rebounds. Holifield finished with 13 points and seven rebounds and Ja'Sean Jackson added 12 points.
 
The Vaqueros trailed by 11 points with just under 14 minutes left in the game. The Vaqueros used the three-pointer to fight their way back into the game. Davis hit his third three-pointer that made it 56-51 and the Fleming Jr. and Raimey knocked down three-pointers to get the Vaqueros within 58-57.
 
The Vaqueros made 16 three-pointers in the game, including Davis' final three-pointer that made it 66-64. UTRGV made their free throws down the stretch to tie the game setting up Lamar's game-winner. 
 
The Vaqueros made seven of their 16 three-pointers in the first half, including four in the first eight minutes as they held a 16-13 lead. 
 
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Monday when they visit Stephen F. Austin at 6:30 p.m. at the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
