RIO GRANDE VALLEY – Graduate student
Angelo Cabral pitched his first-career complete game shutout to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team, which is receiving votes for the second week in a row in the
USA Today Coaches and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Polls, to a 10-0, 7-innings victory over the Texas Southern Tigers Tuesday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in front of a crowd of 5,111, the fourth-largest in program history.
The Vaqueros (15-3), the No. 2 team in the NCAA RPI, are tied for the fifth-best start in program history and off to their best overall start since 1979, when they started a program record 16-1.
Cabral (2-0) retired the first 10 batters he faced and faced just one over the minimum 21 batters through a season-high 7.0 innings. He allowed three singles, but one Tiger (8-13) was caught stealing and another was erased by a double play. Cabral finished with a season-high nine strikeouts without walking anybody and throwing 53 of his 78 pitches (67.9%) for strikes.
Freshman
Cameron Carter led the Vaqueros offensively by going a career-best 3-for-4 with an RBI and a career-high tying two runs scored. Graduate student Vela alum
Isaac Lopez went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Graduate student PSJA alum
Jacob Sanchez finished 2-for-2 with a double, a walk, a hit by pitch, an RBI, and two runs scored.
Carter and Lopez opened the third inning with singles against
Kameron Walton (0-1), putting runners on the corners. Junior
Thomas Williams hit a sacrifice fly and then sophomore
Easton Moomau hit an RBI-double. One batter after a groundout moved Moomau to third, Sanchez hit an RBI-single to put the Vaqueros up 3-0.
Carter and Lopez led off the fourth with singles as well. After a groundball advanced the runners, Moomau hit a sacrifice fly and senior
Steven Lancia hit an RBI-single to make the score 5-0.
Sanchez and junior
Rene Galván opened the fifth inning with walks. After an error loaded the bases, Carter hit an RBI-single and Williams came up with a one-out RBI-groundout to make the score 7-0.
In the sixth, Lancia and sophomore
Armani Raygoza led off with home runs to left. Sanchez followed with a double, moved to third on a fly ball, and scored on a ground ball by senior
Hank Warren to make the score 10-0.
