RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team is hosting the McNeese Cowgirls Monday at 11 a.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center in a Southland Conference (SLC) match.
This will be the first match between these teams played in Edinburg since 2010, which is also the last time UTRGV defeated McNeese in a 4-3 contest. The Vaqueros (3-3, 1-0 SLC) are 3-9 all-time against McNeese (12-2, 0-1 SLC) but the programs haven't played each other since 2017. The Cowgirls have won two in a row over the Vaqueros.
UTRGV heads into this match with some momentum after opening its first SLC season with a convincing 6-1 win over Southeastern. The Vaqueros took the doubles point and won five of six first sets in singles to quickly take control of the bout.
McNeese is coming in after dropping its conference opener, 4-3, to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders. But the Vaqueros know McNeese is a dangerous team after finishing second in the regular season last year and making the SLC Tournament championship match.
The Vaqueros hope to lean on the home court advantage to keep their hot start to conference play going. Warm and windy conditions are expected. UTRGV is prepared to compete in that environment and believes the conditions can give them an edge.
