NEW ORLEANS – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team got back in the win column Saturday with a 5-2 victory over the New Orleans (UNO) Privateers in a Southland Conference (SLC) match at the Privateer Tennis Center.
UTRGV (6-6, 3-2 SLC) started the match with an edge as the shorthanded Privateers (4-7, 0-3 SLC) had to forfeit two matches. With only five players available, the No. 3 doubles match was defaulted, and the No. 6 singles match was, too, giving the Vaqueros a 1-0 lead before first serve.
The Vaqueros needed just one doubles win to claim the doubles point. Sophomore

Mariia Bakhtina earned a swift 6-0 win in the No. 2 flight to grow the lead to 2-0.
Sophomore
Madeleine Joffe dominated on the fourth singles court to make it 3-0 in favor of UTRGV. She needed just 45 minutes to complete a perfect 6-0, 6-0 victory, not giving her opponent an inch.
UNO got on the board with a win in the second singles bout by
Fleur Sprengers. But junior
Yaiza Vazquez clinched the victory for the Vaqueros with a gritty 7-5, 7-6 (7:4) win in the third flight.
Sophomore
Hitakamya Narwal extended the lead to 5-1 with a hard-fought three-set win, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, in the fifth flight. The Privateers picked up the last win of the day with a three-set comeback by
Kateryna Kalistratova in the No. 1 flight.
This was UTRGV's first win over New Orleans since 1994 and snapped an eight-match losing streak to the Privateers.
UTRGV's next match is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday at Nicholls.
