THIBODAUX, La. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team defeated the Nicholls Colonels, 6-1, Monday in a Southland Conference (SLC) match at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex.
UTRGV (7-6, 4-2 SLC) started strong by clinching the doubles point. The Colonels (2-9, 0-4 SLC) won the first doubles match on the third court, then the Vaqueros rallied back. Senior

Yaiza Vazquez evened things up with a 6-4 win in the No. 1 flight. Shortly after, sophomore
Rhea Makesar and freshman
Mariia Bakhtina secured the 1-0 lead with a 6-4 win on Court 2.
Vazquez grew the UTRGV lead to 2-0 with a won in the third singles flight. After battling through a tight first set, she dominated the second for a 7-5, 6-1 win. Nicholls trimmed its deficit with a win in the sixth flight.
The Vaqueros locked up the victory on the fifth and first courts. On Court 5, sophomore
Hitakamya Narwal controlled the match from start to finish and earned a 6-1, 6-2 win. Makesar was solid in the first flight and captured a 6-3, 6-4 win to make it 4-1.
Sophomore
Madeleine Joffe toughed it out in an up-and-down match on Court 4. Joffe rolled in the first set, but
Julia Bordiginon came back to cruise in the second. Joffe played a full third and found another level to claim the 6-1, 0-6, 6-2 victory.
Dule battled for a solid comeback victory in the second flight. She dropped a tight first set then showed her resilience to take the next two, improving to 5-1 in conference play with the 6-7 (3:7), 6-0, 1-0 (10:5) win.
The Vaqueros will be back in action April 5 at 1 p.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center to face Lamar. UTRGV will celebrate Senior Day before the match.
