THIBODAUX, La. – A delayed start due to rain didn't faze The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team Monday as the Vaqueros handled the Nicholls Colonels in a 4-0 Southland Conference (SLC) victory at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex.
The Vaqueros (8-13, 2-0 SLC) have now won six matches in a row for the first time since 1992.
UTRGV went up 1-0 with another strong showing from the second and third doubles pairs. The No. 3 duo of sophomore
Ivo Isqueiro and freshman
Eduardo Menezes earned its fourth consecutive win, defeating the Colonels 6-1. Redshirt junior
Sam Whitehead and sophomore
Paolo Bonaguro used a big 4-0 start on Court 2 to secure the doubles point with a 6-4 win.
The Vaqueros won first sets in all six singles matches to create good momentum. Freshman
Loic Young Kriegel got a win in the fourth flight after his opponent retired with Young leading 6-2, 2-0 to give UTRGV a 2-0 lead. Whitehead extended the lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win in the No. 1 flight.
Menezes clinched UTRGV's victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win in the sixth flight. Though the other three matches went unfinished, the Vaqueros were in good spots on those courts, too. Isqueiro was leading 6-3, 4-1 in the second flight and sophomore
Santiago Serrano outdueled
Colin Tavares of Nicholls (6-7, 0-2 SLC) in a 7-6 (8:6) first set on Court 3 before jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the second when the bout was called.
UTRGV's next match will be a home contest on April 5 at 10 a.m. against Lamar at the Orville Cox Tennis Center. The Vaqueros will be celebrating Senior Day before the match.
