RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis teams rolled past the Lamar Cardinals 6-1 on Saturday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
The Vaqueros (8-6, 5-2 SLC) improved their record at home to 6-1 with Saturday's win. UTRGV got things rolling in doubles as the team of freshman
Mariia Bakhtina and junior
Yaiza Vazquez beat Arina Guovskaya and Luana Paiva 6-2.
Then it was the duo of senior
Kristal Dule and sophomore
Rhea Makesar who defeated Asta Miettinen and Megan Do 6-3 to give UTRGV the 1-0 lead.
The Vaqueros continued their dominance in singles as Dule gave them the 2-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Miettinen on court two. Sophomore
Hitakamya Narwal extended UTRGV's lead with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Martina Vergara on court five.
Makesar took the first set in her match against Gudovskya 6-4 on court one but fell 4-6 in the second. Makesar then dominated the final set 6-1 to pick up the win clinching the victory for UTRGV.
The Cardinals (3-11, 1-5 SLC) got their lone point on court six, but Vazquez closed out the match with a three-set battle against Do. Vazquez opened with a 6-2 win in the first set before falling in the second. The final set went to the tiebreaker as Vazquez won 8-6 to clinch the win.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Monday when they host Incarnate Word at 11 a.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
