Rally Falls Short as Baseball Drops Opener at TCU

FORT WORTH – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team, which is receiving votes for the third week in a row in the USA Today Coaches and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Polls, scored twice in the ninth and brought the go-ahead run to the plate before falling to the TCU Horned Frogs 4-3 on Tuesday at Lupton Stadium.

The Vaqueros (17-6) trailed 4-1 with one out in the ninth when graduate student PSJA alum Jacob Sanchez reached on an error. Junior Rene Galván followed with a double and then senior Hank Warren hit an RBI-groundout. Junior Thomas Williams hit an RBI-double to bring the Vaqueros within one, but Gianluca Shinn came in to strikeout sophomore Evan Janner to end the game and pick up his first save.

Galván finished 2-for-4, hitting two doubles for the second-straight game while scoring twice.

The Vaqueros led 1-0 after the top of the second, as with two outs in the inning, Galván doubled against Trever Baumler (2-2). Warren followed with a grounder to short. Anthony Silva's throw pulled Isaac Cadena off the first base bag, allowing Warren to reach. Cadena then tried throwing to third to get Galván, but the throw got away, allowing Galván to score to put the Vaqueros up 1-0.

Making his first Vaqueros start, senior Sharyland Pioneer alum Evan Maldonado (0-1) pitched a hitless first. In the second, though, Chase Brunson, Nolan Traeger and Silva walked to load the bases. Jack Bell followed with a bases-clearing triple and then Karson Bowen hit an RBI-single to put the Horned Frogs (18-7) up 4-1.

The Vaqueros bullpen followed with 7.0 scoreless innings.

Junior Nick Nolan entered the game after Bowen's hit and pitched a career-high 3.0 scoreless innings, striking out two.

Junior Sharyland alum Kike Cienfuegos followed with a career-high 3.2 scoreless innings, striking out a career-high four.

Graduate student Jack Lopez came in with runners on the corners and two outs in the eighth. The Horned Frogs sent the runners from first, but senior Steven Lancia threw him out, marking the second runner caught by Lancia during the game, to end the inning.
