FORT WORTH – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team, which is receiving votes for the third week in a row in the
USA Today Coaches and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Polls, scored twice in the ninth and brought the go-ahead run to the plate before falling to the TCU Horned Frogs 4-3 on Tuesday at Lupton Stadium.
The Vaqueros (17-6) trailed 4-1 with one out in the ninth when graduate student PSJA alum
Jacob Sanchez reached on an error. Junior
Rene Galván followed with a double and then senior
Hank Warren hit an RBI-groundout. Junior
Thomas Williams hit an RBI-double to bring the Vaqueros within one, but
Gianluca Shinn came in to strikeout sophomore
Evan Janner to end the game and pick up his first save.
Galván finished 2-for-4, hitting two doubles for the second-straight game while scoring twice.
The Vaqueros led 1-0 after the top of the second, as with two outs in the inning, Galván doubled against
Trever Baumler (2-2). Warren followed with a grounder to short.
Anthony Silva's throw pulled
Isaac Cadena off the first base bag, allowing Warren to reach. Cadena then tried throwing to third to get Galván, but the throw got away, allowing Galván to score to put the Vaqueros up 1-0.
Making his first Vaqueros start, senior Sharyland Pioneer alum
Evan Maldonado (0-1) pitched a hitless first. In the second, though,
Chase Brunson,
Nolan Traeger and Silva walked to load the bases.
Jack Bell followed with a bases-clearing triple and then
Karson Bowen hit an RBI-single to put the Horned Frogs (18-7) up 4-1.
The Vaqueros bullpen followed with 7.0 scoreless innings.
Junior
Nick Nolan entered the game after Bowen's hit and pitched a career-high 3.0 scoreless innings, striking out two.
Junior Sharyland alum
Kike Cienfuegos followed with a career-high 3.2 scoreless innings, striking out a career-high four.
Graduate student
Jack Lopez came in with runners on the corners and two outs in the eighth. The Horned Frogs sent the runners from first, but senior
Steven Lancia threw him out, marking the second runner caught by Lancia during the game, to end the inning.
UTRGV and TCU complete this two-game series Wednesday at 6 p.m. on
Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
