HOUSTON – For their second-straight Tuesday game, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team pulled off a ninth inning rally, this time scoring six runs to beat the University of Houston Cougars 9-5 on Tuesday at Schroeder Park.
Two weeks earlier, the Vaqueros used an 11-run ninth inning to beat No. 20 Dallas Baptist 15-5.

The win is the 200
th of UTRGV head coach
Derek Matlock's career. In his eighth season, Matlock is 200-163 (.551).
The Vaqueros (8-2) are now on a 4-game winning streak and have won four of their last five contests against the Cougars (7-4).
The baseball team is the second UTRGV team to beat Houston, a Big 12 opponent, this academic year, following in the footsteps of women's basketball, which won at Houston 70-68 on Nov. 5.
The Vaqueros trailed 5-3 entering the ninth. Junior
Rene Galván and senior
Hank Warren led off the inning with singles against
Richie Roman (0-1). One out later, graduate student Vela alum
Isaac Lopez was plunked to load the bases. Junior
Thomas Williams followed with a 2-run double to tie the game. Then, with two outs, senior
Steven Lancia hit a 2-run triple to give the Vaqueros the lead. One pitch later, sophomore
Armani Raygoza launched his third home run of the season over the right field wall to cap the inning.
That made a winner of junior
Rex Henderson (1-0), who pitched a hitless eighth in his Vaqueros debut.
Williams, Raygoza, and sophomore
Easton Moomau all finished with two hits and two RBI. Moomau drove-in his runs with RBI-singles in the first to put the Vaqueros up 1-0 and the third to tie the game at 2.
Moomau's second single tied the game because
Carsten Sabathia III hit a 2-run single in the bottom of the first to give the Cougars a 2-1 lead.
The Vaqueros took a 3-2 lead in the fourth when a wild pitch scored Raygoza, but the Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the inning on an RBI-single by
Kenneth Jimenez.
That's where the score stayed until the seventh when
Tre Broussard led off with a single and stole second. One out later,
Connor McGinnis hit an RBI-double to give the Cougars the lead. Then, with two outs,
Xavier Perez hit an RBI-double to put the Cougars up 5-3.
UTRGV opens a 3-game Southland Conference series at New Orleans Friday at 6:30 p.m. in a game that will be broadcast domestically on
ESPN+ and internationally via
