SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team was defeated, 4-2, by the Sacramento State (SAC) Hornets Saturday at the Sacramento State Tennis Complex to close out the Golden State Invitational.
Sacramento State (7-7, 1-3 Big Sky) took the 1-0 lead in the match after a competitive doubles session. The Hornets rolled on Court One, but the next two matches needed a tiebreaker to be decided. UTRGV's No. 2 duo of redshirt junior
Sam Whitehead and sophomore
Paolo Bonaguro jumped out to a 5:2 lead in the tiebreaker, but they were unable to complete the match as the Hornets held on for a 7-6 (7:1) win in the third flight.
The singles competitions were tight across the board, leading to the match evening out at 2-2. The Hornets picked up a win on the fifth court, but the Vaqueros rallied. Freshman
Eduardo Menezes rolled in the No. 6 match to pick up a 6-1, 6-4 victory. Sophomore
Ivo Isqueiro added a solid 6-4, 6-4 win in the second flight to keep the match within reach.
Sacramento State regained the lead, 3-2, with a hard win in the first flight. Whitehead and
Henry Lamchinniah swapped blows in a second set that went the distance before the Hornet took a 6-3, 7-5 win.
Sophomore
Santiago Serrano and freshman
Loic Young Kriegel were battling on the third and fourth courts, respectively, as the team victory hung in the balance. Both matches went to third sets, but the Hornets secured the victory with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win by
Hayden Rand on Court Four. Serrano was leading the third set of his match, 1-0, when it went unfinished.
The Vaqueros (2-13, 0-0 Southland Conference) will be back in action Monday at 11 a.m. at UC Riverside.
