RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The Southland Conference (SLC) announced on Wednesday that The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team will open SLC play on Dec. 3 at Stephen F. Austin.
 
The Vaqueros will play 22 conference games, facing each opponent twice, leading to the SLC Tournament on March 8-11 in Lake Charles, La.

"I think going from year one to year two with not only myself but our staff and our returning players, I think all of us are looking forward to getting another crack at this thing," UTRGV Head Coach Kahil Fennell said. "Last year didn't go as well as we hoped and the chance to rectify that and the opportunity to get back out here and really show what we are about and what this program truly is becoming is an exciting opportunity."
 
The Vaqueros will remain on the road after the opening conference game as they visit Lamar on Dec. 16. UTRGV will then have four-straight home games when they host New Orleans on Dec. 29, Nicholls on Dec. 31, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, on Jan. 3 and Incarnate Word on Jan. 5 at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. 
 
The Vaqueros will then visit Texas A&M-Commerce on Jan. 10 and Northwestern State on Jan. 12 before coming home to host McNeese on Jan. 17 and Southeastern on Jan. 19. A three-game road trip will see the Vaqueros visit Houston Christian University on Jan. 24, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Jan. 26, and Incarnate Word on Jan. 31. 
 
The Vaqueros return home to host Houston Christian University on Feb. 2 before getting back on the road to visit New Orleans on Feb. 7 and Nicholls on Feb. 9. UTRGV returns to the UTRGV Fieldhouse on Feb. 14 to host Stephen F. Austin and then Lamar on Feb. 16. 
 
The Vaqueros then visit Southeastern on Feb. 21 to start their final road trip of the season before visiting McNeese on Feb. 23. UTRGV then closes out the regular season at home when they host Texas A&M-Commerce on Feb. 28 and Northwestern State on Mar. 2.
 
"We can't wait to get into the Southland schedule," Fennell said. "It's a really good conference this year just like it was last year. The opportunity to get going again is something we are excited about."
