RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The Southland Conference announced on Monday that senior quarterback
Eddie Lee Marburger of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) football team earned honorable mention for conference offensive player of the week.
A Sharyland Pioneer alum, Marburger started the inaugural game, a 66-0 win over Sul Ross State on Saturday at Robert & Janet Vackar Stadium, and was nearly perfect. After starting the game with an incomplete pass, he connected on his next 18 passes to finish 18-for-19 to help UTRGV build a 49-0 halftime lead. Marburger led the offense to touchdowns on each of his seven drives, with six of them lasting under two minutes. He threw three touchdown passes of over 50 yards, including one that went 76 yards. Marburger threw the first touchdown pass in program history, a 50-yard strike to sophomore
Xayvion Noland. He even served as the lead blocker on a 52-yard rush Noland that led to the Vaqueros' fourth touchdown.
Marburger finished the game with a 342.9 QB rating, the best in FCS. He also leads the FCS in completion percentage (.947), passing touchdowns (5), and yards per pass attempts (19.21).
Marburger narrowly missed the FCS record for highest percentage of completions (minimum 20 completions) of 96.2%, held by
Ricky Santos of New Hampshire who went 25-fo-26 vs. Northeastern on Oct. 22, 2005.
Freshman quarterback
Aidan Jakobsohn completed all seven of his pass attempts while freshman quarterback
Atzel Chavez Jr. completed his lone pass attempt as the three Vaqueros
quarterbacks finished 26 for 27 (96.3%). The FCS record for completion percentage, which requires a minimum of 30 attempts, is 91.3% (42-for-46) by UT Martin vs. Murray State on Oct. 13, 2012.
The Vaqueros play their first-ever road game on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 6 p.m. at Prairie View A&M in a game that can watched on
SWAC TV. Fans also listen locally on Ultra 90.1 FM, in Laredo on Pure Country 95.7 FM, and online via the
