CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team is opening the fall season this weekend at the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The tournament will start at 9 a.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center. The Vaqueros will compete against individuals from the hosting Islanders, Abilene Christian, Incarnate Word, Lamar, Lubbock Christian, and UTSA.
The doubles will kick off first at 9 a.m. on Friday. UTRGV will have four teams in the tournament with junior
Paolo Bonaguro and redshirt senior
Sam Whitehead and sophomore South Florida transfer
Michael Chan and junior
Will Roberts in the blue draw. Junior
Santiago Serrano and sophomore
Loic Young Kriegel will compete in the green draw alongside junior
Ivo Isqueiro and freshman
Luke Bishop. Sophomore
Francisco Gamez will pair with Lamar's
Stefano Chappuis in a round-robin for the purple draw.
In singles action, UTRGV will have nine student-athletes competing in the open. Isqueiro and Whitehead will be in the blue draw, Serrano will compete in the green draw, Chan and Young will be in the purple draw, Bishop and Bonaguro lineup in the orange draw, and Gamez will play a round-robin format in the pink draw.
