HOUSTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team hung tough with the University of Houston Cougars but fell 1-0 on Thursday at Carl Lewis International Complex.
The Vaqueros (3-4) defense stood strong throughout the first half, denying the Cougars (5-0-2) through the first 43 minutes of the match.
It wasn't until the 44
th minute that the Cougars grabbed the lead as Savannah Tafireyi bent one over the top of the defense and into the top right corner of the goal to make it 1-0.
UTRGV's defense anchored down in the second half, handling the Cougars' pressure. The Vaqueros countered in the final eight minutes of the match as they put the pressure on the Cougars.
The Vaqueros had a couple of good looks including a shot by junior
Linnea Eld in the closing seconds that missed right of the goal.
The Vaqueros were outshot 19 to 2 and 5 to 0 on goal.
Junior
Emilia Compian finished the match with four saves.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Sept. 14 when they visit the Texas Southern Tigers at 1 p.m. at Alexander Durley Stadium.
