SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros cross country teams had a strong meet Friday at the UIW Invitational, with the women's team finishing second in the season opener. The teams combined for six top-25 finishes and three personal best times.
UTRGV's women's squad, running a 5K race, was led by senior
Lilliana Guerrero (18:27:3) and sophomore Santa Maria alum
Mia Picazo (18:28:2), who finished 13
th and 14
th, respectively. Picazo collected a personal record with a top 15 finish. Junior
N Vanee Acnhike finished 23
rd in 18:55:8 and junior PSJA High alum
Faith Cruz was right behind in 18:58:1 to place 24
th. Junior
Kailey Salazar rounded out the scoring finishing 33
rd. Junior Rio Grande City alum
Morgan Ramos placed 51
st with a personal best in 19:56:0.
The Vaqueros finished second of five teams with 87 points, tying with UIW. Texas won the women's title with 17 points, Texas State placed fourth with 93 points, and Trinity (TX.) was fifth with 113 points.
The men's team ran a 4-miler. Junior
Abraham Morales, who was the team's top finisher at every meet last season, led UTRGV with a 21
st place finish in 20:29, recording a personal record with the top 25 finish. Freshman McAllen Memorial alum
Roehl Rodriguez had a solid collegiate debut with a 22
nd place finish in 20:29.9. Freshman Weslaco East alum
Adrianno Gonzalez finished in 20:42.0 to take 29
th. Sophomore McAllen Rowe alum
Kevin Cardenas took 58
th place in 21:12.9 and sophomore Mission Veterans alum
Manuel Flores was the final scorer in 62
nd with a time of 21:17.1. Freshman McAllen High alum
Soloman Lazo was 73
rd in his collegiate debut.
As a team, UTRGV's men finished seventh. UIW won the men's title with 34 points, followed by Texas (67), Texas State (110), UTSA (113) and Trinity (152).
Up next for UTRGV is the Arturo Barrios Invitational on Oct. 17 in Bryan-College Station, Texas.
