HOUSTON & KINGSVILLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team is splitting up and traveling to their first fall tournaments of the season with the Rice Invitational, hosted by Rice, and the Javelina Jam, hosted by Texas A&M-Kingsville, this weekend.
 
Rice Invitational
 
The Vaqueros are sending senior Yaiza Vazquez, junior Rhea Makesar, junior Madeleine Joffe, and sophomore Mariia Bakhtina to the Rice Invitational, which will run from Friday to Sunday.
 
UTRGV will compete against individuals from Texas A&M (TAMU), Houston (UH), Southern Methodist (SMU), Rice, UT San Antonio (UTSA), North Texas (UNT), and Sam Houston (SHSU).
 
In doubles, Bakhtina and Makesar will compete in Flight 1 while Joffe and Vazquez will compete in Flight 2.
 
In singles action, Vazquez is lined up in Flight 2 while Joffe and Makesar compete in Flight 3 and Bakhtina is slotted in Flight 6.
 
Javelina Jam
 
UTRGV is sending junior Hitakamya Narwal, senior Valentina Urraco, sophomore Luna Buijtenhuijs, and junior Giuliana Castelain to the Javelina Jam, which will run on Friday and Saturday.
 
The Vaqueros will compete against individuals from the hosting Texas A&M-Kingsville (TAMUK) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (AMCC).
 
The tournament will kick off a round-robin doubles format. The pair of Buijtenhuijs and Narwal will compete in Flight A while Castelain and Urraco will play in Flight B.
 
In singles action, Narwal and Urraco will compete in Flight A with matches starting at 1:30 p.m. while Buijtenhuijs competes in Flight B and Castelain is slotted in Flight C.
