LUBBOCK, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis team was defeated 6-1 by Abilene Christian (ACU) Monday at Lubbock Country Club.
The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead, taking the doubles point with 6-1 wins on courts two and three.
In singles, the Wildcats sealed the victory with wins on courts one, two, and four. The Wildcats added a fifth win on court six before the Vaqueros took their first point of the match.
Junior
Rhea Makesar picked up UTRGV's first win of the spring on court three, after playing three grueling sets. In the first set, Makesar led 5-3 before
Angela Del Campo knotted the set at 5-5. Makesar bounced back, winning the final two games which included breaking Del Campo's serve to win the set.
In the second set, Makesar dropped a break early, trailing 3-1 before tying up the game count at 3 apiece. Makesar and Del Campo traded games and breaks until reaching a tiebreaker for the set. Trailing 6-7 in the tiebreak, Makesar rattled off three-straight points to win the set 7-6 (9-7) and secure the Vaqueros lone win of the day.
Meanwhile, at the number five spot, sophomore
Luna Buijtenhuijs found herself in a back-and-forth first set that went 6-4 for ACU's
Victoria Correa. Correa carried that momentum into the second set, taking a 3-1 advantage over Buijtenhuijs, before Buijtenhuijs rallied to win the set 6-3. Correa bounced back to take the deciding tiebreaker 10-2 in the third set.
UTRGV will visit UT Arlington Saturday for its second-straight matchup against former conference opponents.
