RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The Southland Conference (SLC) announced on Wednesday that The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros indoor track & field senior
Nayla Harris has been named the SLC Women's Track Athlete of the Week.
Harris opened her season Jan. 10 at Houston's Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational with a win in the women's 60-meter dash. Her finals time of 7.18 is a Southland Conference and UTRGV program record and has Harris ranked No. 3 in the entire nation. That time would have been fast enough to take sixth at the 2025 NCAA Indoor Championships.
Harris ran 7.23 to advance out of the 60 prelims as the top qualifier. That race was her temporary program and personal record before she improved her time in the finals. Harris owns all 10 of the fastest 60 races in the UTRGV indoor record books. The fastest woman in Southland history is the reigning SLC Indoor Champion in the 60-meter dash and SLC Outdoor Champion in the 100-meter dash.
This is the third SLC Track Athlete of the Week award for Harris.
Sophomore
Jefferson Jean tabbed an honorable mention nod for SLC Men's Track Athlete of the Week. Jean set a program record in the men's 60-meter hurdles, running 7.90 to take second in the event at the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational. He leads the SLC and is tied for 51
st in the nation with that time.
