DALLAS – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team battled with the Southern Methodist (SMU) Mustangs Friday in a 5-2 loss at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.
The Vaqueros opened the match in a doubles deadlock. The Chilean duo of junior
Santiago Serrano and sophomore
Loic Young dominated their match on court three, winning 6-2. Meanwhile, the Mustangs took court two in a 6-1 rout. That left the doubles point in the hands of court one where junior
Will Roberts and graduate student
Sam Whitehead battled, but eventually fell 7-5.
In singles, sophomore
Tsz Him "Michael" Chan picked up his third win of the spring, wearing down
Matthew Faraci straight-sets battle, 6-4, 6-3, to earn the Vaqueros first point of the match.
Meanwhile, on court five, Young carried his momentum from doubles to a tight 6-4 first set win. However, in the second set,
Vikas Deo knotted the match with another 6-4 finish to set up the deciding tiebreak. In the tiebreaker, Young dominated with a mix of powerful forehands to seal the match with a 10-4 win.
A few minutes later, Roberts wrapped up his grueling three-set battle on court four.
Noah McDonald won the first set 7-5, in the only set to reach a seventh game in the singles session. Roberts bounced back in the second, breaking his opponent to go up 4-3 and ultimately won the set 6-4. The tiebreaker went the distance with McDonald outlasting Roberts 11-9 to round out singles play.
SMU took the win with straight sets victories on courts one, two, and three.
The Vaqueros head to Lubbock for their next series of matches. UTRGV will battle Texas Tech on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 4 p.m. before taking on New Mexico State on Sunday, Feb. 8. All matches are scheduled to take place at the McLeod Tennis Center.
