RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis program is ready for their home opener against Texas State (TXST) Saturday at 12 p.m. at Orville Cox Tennis Center before hitting the road to visit Texas A&M-Kingsville (TAMUK) at 1 p.m. Sunday at Javelina Tennis Courts.
Last Time Out
The Vaqueros were scheduled to battle UT Arlington and Southern Methodist (SMU) last weekend but canceled due to the winter storm that raged across the U.S.
UTRGV's last competition came two weeks ago when they traveled to Lubbock to take on No. 20 Texas Tech and Abilene Christian (ACU).
In those matchups, the Vaqueros took one match against ACU as junior
Rhea Makesar battled in a tight, straight sets win over
Angela Del Campo, 7-5, 7-6 (9-7). Meanwhile, sophomore
Luna Buijtenhuijs pushed
Victoria Correa to a third set but fell 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-2).
Texas State – Jan. 31, 12 p.m. – Orville Cox Tennis Center – Edinburg, Texas
The Vaqueros will host their home opener Saturday against the Bobcats. This will be the fourth consecutive season in which these teams meet. UTRGV is 4-28 all-time against Texas State with their last win coming in 2023, a 5-2 win in San Marcos.
Last time these squads faced, TXST won 7-0 in San Marcos. The Vaqueros showed fight on courts two and five but couldn't capitalize.
Texas State, a member of the Sun Belt Conference, is currently 0-2 on the season, falling in sweeps to Wichita State and No. 6 Oklahoma.
The match will begin at 12 p.m. All matches held at the Orville Cox Tennis Center is free and open to the public. Gates will open one hour prior to the match.
Texas A&M-Kingsville – Feb. 1, 1 p.m. – Javelina Tennis Courts – Kingsville, Texas
The Vaqueros will turnaround and head to Kingsville for their matchup with the Javelinas Sunday. The Vaqueros have faced the Javelinas in back-to-back seasons, winning 5-2 in 2024 and 6-1 in 2025.
UTRGV leads the all-time series 15-3 over TAMUK. In their last matchup, the Vaqueros took the doubles point in a sweep before winning on courts one, two, four, five, and six to solidify the 6-1 win.
TAMUK, an NCAA Div. II institution and member of the Lone Star Conference, will open their season against UTRGV in an exhibition matchup for the Javelinas.
