HAMMOND — The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's soccer team fought hard but fell to the Southeastern Lions (SLU) 1-0 Sunday at Strawberry Stadium.
The Lions (6-6-2, 2-3-1 SLC) scored the winning goal in the 82
nd minute, as
Brooke Opferman found the back of the net. The Lions found the ball off a second chance opportunity and broke the score after 82 minutes of gritty defense by both teams.
The Vaqueros (4-8-1, 0-4-1 SLC) held the line throughout the match, sophomore
Mariana Amezcua tallied a career-high tying eight saves facing 14 shots from the Lions. This is the third time this season Amezcua has recorded eight saves.
In the 62
nd minute, Lions'
Anna Claire Schwing took a shot with her left boot that was punched away and saved by Amezcua to keep the score tied.
Later in the 74
th minute, Amezcua continued to shine as she recorded her seventh save from the strike by Lions'
Sage Sturrock. Sturrock found clearance about 10 yards away from the box and took a shot that found the arms of Amezcua.
SLU finished with a 14-12 advantage in shots, including a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. The Vaqueros recorded eight saves compared to three for the Lions, while SLU held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Vaqueros return home Oct. 15, to face Nicholls at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex at 6:30 p.m., on Thursday.
All matches held at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex will be free and open to the public. Gates open at 10 a.m.
