Chan, Young Earn Singles Wins in Loss at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team dropped the first round of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC) 4-2 at Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center Wednesday.
 
The Vaqueros earned their first point of the match during singles play when sophomore Loic Young Kriegel won his second consecutive match, defeating Matthieu Coignet in straight-sets, 6-1, 6-3. In the first set, Young won five consecutive games to win the set. In the second, Young and Coignet were knotted at 3-3 before Young took the next three games to win the match.
 
On court six, sophomore Tsz Him "Michael" Chan secured his fifth win of the season, pushing his record to 5-2 in the spring, defeating Filip Vacula 6-2, 7-6 (9:7). Chan started off strong, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first before Vacula won the next two games. Then, Chan regained the advantage, winning the next three games to take the first.
 
In the second, the pair traded games until reaching 6-6. In the tiebreak, the Vacula jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but Chan turned it around and tied it at 4-4. The pair traded points pushing the seven-point tiebreaker to the distance. Tied at 7-7, Chan won the next two points to claim the second point for UTRGV.
 
Junior Will Roberts battled with Ethan Dasset on court four in a match that was abandoned in the second set. In the first, Dasset jumped out to a 4-1 lead, before Roberts rallied back to knot the set at 5-5, and eventually pushing the set to a tiebreak, which Dasset won 7-2. In the second set, Roberts jumped out to an early advantage, leading 4-1, before Dasset battled back to make it 4-4. The match was abandoned at 5-5 in the set.
 
TAMUCC earned the win with the doubles point and wins on courts one, two, and three.
 
UTRGV is traveling to Idaho for a two-match swing which will include matches against Idaho on Friday and UC San Diego on Saturday.
