Men’s Tennis Battles in Loss at Idaho

MOSCOW, Idaho – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team was defeated 4-3 by the Idaho (UI) Vandals Friday at the P1FCU Kibbie Dome.
 
The Vandals swept a tightly contested doubles session which was separated by five games across all three courts. The first to finish was court two which ended 6-4. Then, court three ended 7-5 before court one wrapped up at 7-6 (7:5) both in favor of the Vandals.
 
The Vandals clinched the match 4-0 before the Vaqueros picked up three consecutive wins to close the gap to 4-3 with wins on courts three, five, and six.
 
Junior Santiago Serrano picked up the first win for UTRGV, a three-set marathon against Mikolaj Lis that lasted two hours and seven minutes. With the first set knotted at 5-5, Serrano held his service game and broke Lis' serve to capture the first 7-5.
 
Lis responded in the second with a 6-3 win to force a deciding third set. Lis jumped out to a huge 1-4 lead before Serrano roared back, winning five consecutive games to win the deciding set 6-4.
 
Junior Loic Young Kriegel was the next Vaquero to finish, taking the first set with a dominant 6-2 performance before his opponent, Eric William Wang, retired from the match. Young has won four of his last five matches with wins against opponents from SMU, New Mexico State (NMSU), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC), and Idaho.
 
Sophomore Tsz Him "Michael" Chan was the final match of the afternoon, showcasing another dominant performance, this time against Xavier Martin, winning 6-0, 6-3. Chan won the first seven games of the match and the final three games to clinch his match. Chan has won four consecutive matches and has pushed his record to 6-2 at No. 6 singles with wins against opponents from Rice, SMU, NMSU, and TAMUCC among others.
 
UI earned the win with victories on courts one, two, and four.
 
UTRGV will turn around for a neutral-site match against UC San Diego at the P1FCU Kibbie Dome Saturday at 4 p.m.
