MOSCOW, Idaho – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis program is headed to Idaho for a two-match swing which includes contests against the Idaho (UI) Vandals and the UC San Diego (UCSD) Tritons this weekend at the P1FCU Kibbie Dome.
Last Time Out
The Vaqueros dropped the first round of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Wednesday, but experienced some bright spots at the bottom of the lineup in singles.
Sophomore
Loic Young Kriegel picked up a dominant 6-1, 6-3 victory over
Matthieu Coginet on court five to earn the first point for the Vaqueros.
On court six, junior
Tsz Him "Michael" Chan improved his spring record to 5-2 with a 6-2, 7-6 (9:7) win over
Filip Vacula. Chan and Vacula went back-and-forth in the second with Chan escaping the second to win the match.
Idaho – Feb. 13, 4 p.m. – P1FCU Kibbie Dome – Moscow, Idaho
UTRGV will open the weekend with a road match against the Idaho Vandals Friday starting at 4 p.m. The Vaqueros are 0-2 all-time against the Vandals with the last match played in 2014, a 4-2 win for the Vandals in Las Cruces, N.M.
Idaho, a member of the Big Sky Conference, is 3-7 on the year with wins over George Fox, Lewis-Clark State, and Linfield. All seven of the Vandals losses have come against NCAA DI programs.
Idaho has garnered 5-3 records at No. 2 doubles, No. 3 singles, No. 5 singles this season. Meanwhile, UTRGV has achieved winning records at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles this season.
UC San Diego – Feb. 14, 4 p.m. – P1FCU Kibbie Dome – Moscow, Idaho
UTRGV will wrap up the weekend with a neutral-site match against the UC San Diego Tritons on Saturday at 4 p.m. This will be the first ever matchup between the two programs.
UCSD, a member of the Big West Conference, is 4-3 on the season, with wins over Sacramento State and Wofford among others. All three of UCSD's losses have come against DI competition with sweeps against then-No. 19 USC and San Diego State.
UCSD has achieved winning records at the No. 2 and No. 3 line in both doubles and singles this season and are paced by
Zach Pellouchoud who has a perfect 5-0 record with two wins at No. 2 singles and three wins at No. 3 singles.
Meanwhile, in doubles, the duo of
Abhinav Chunduru and
Trevor Nguyen have achieved a perfect 5-0 record at No. 2 doubles.
