AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis fought hard but fell 7-0 to the No. 10 Texas (UT) Longhorns Sunday at Texas Tennis Center.
Senior
Barbara Martinez pushed
Carmen Herea, the number two player in the country, to three sets, winning a marathon first set that went the distance. In the tiebreaker, Martinez jumped out to a massive 6-1 lead, before closing out the set 7-6 (7:3). Herea bounced back, winning the next two sets 6-0, 6-0 to win the match.
Meanwhile, on court five, sophomore
Mariia Bakhtina bounced back from a 6-0 first set loss, battling with
Kate Mansfield in the second set, but ultimately falling, 6-4.
Texas earned straight-set wins on the remaining singles courts to sweep the match.
In doubles play, Texas took the point with quick wins on courts one and two, but the pair of Bakhtina and junior
Hitakamya Narwal pushed UT in a competitive set on court three, ultimately falling 7-5.
The Vaqueros will return home for a match against Utah State Thursday at 11 a.m. All matches at Orville Cox Tennis Center are free and open to the public.
