BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) track & field Vaqueros claimed the gold medal in the men's high jump from freshman
Antwoine Warren and set three meet records on Day 1 of the Southland Conference (SLC) Indoor Championships while punching 26 tickets to finals Wednesday at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama.
Warren matched his personal best clearance of 2.14 meters to win the event. He cleared his first four heights on first attempts to dominate the competition.

N Vanee Anchike and senior
Nayla Harris set the track ablaze with their meet record performances. Anchike ran conference meet bests in the women's mile and 800-meter run, advancing to finals in both events as the No. 1 qualifier. She set a program and personal record in the mile prelim, running 4:44.57. In the 800, she was just .03 shy of her own program record time in 2:08.77, the No. 2 time in program history, to punch her ticket for the final.
Harris advanced to the final of the women's 60-meter dash as the No. 1 time qualifier with her race of 7.20, the fourth-best in program history behind her own three times. She already owns the SLC record in the event (7.18).
UTRGV had five student-athletes, including Warren, score on Day 1 in field events. Harris earned bronze in the women's long jump with a mark of 5.73 meters. Senior
Efe Latham put the first UTRGV points on the board with a fourth-place finish in the women's weight throw. Latham tossed 16.79 meters on her fourth attempt, which is a season best.

Keamonie Archie and freshman
Antwoine Warren finished sixth and eighth, respectively, in the men's long jump to combine for four points. Archie marked 7.16 meters and Warren jumped 7.05 meters. Freshman
Braydn Gilliam tabbed a personal best jump of 6.92 meters.
UTRGV saw four indoor program records fall Wednesday. Both distance medley relays ran program best times. The women's relay of sophomore Santa Maria alum

Joshua Mascall tabbed a UTRGV indoor program record in the men's 200-meter dash, advancing to finals as the No. 3 qualifier in 21.20.
The Vaqueros sent an impressive four student-athletes to the finals of two events: the women's 800 and the women's 200-meter dash. Anchike led the strong women's 800 group, which was one of many highlights for the women's distance runners in Birmingham. Salazar won her heat in 2:14.50 to automatically move on and Picazo advanced as the No. 5 time qualifier with her personal best race of 2:12.88. Senior
Lilliana Guerrero made the final after a successful protest. Guerrero was 10
th in the prelim based on time, but she was impeded with as a runner in her heat tripped during the race, slowing the senior down. After the ruling, the reigning bronze medalist secured a spot in the final.
UTRGV's reigning bronze medalist in the women's 200, sophomore
Jizzale Davis, led the way for stellar Vaqueros group in the event and took second in the prelims with a personal best time of 23.92, the No. 2 race in program history. Junior
Aniya Heckstall tied the fourth-best time in the record books of 24.01, a new personal best, to advance as the three-seed. Harris and senior
Kaliyah Poston reached the final as the seventh and eighth seeds, both running 24.38 with Harris getting ahead by a hair at 24.376 versus 24.379. Redshirt junior
Ashley Lingueno also hit a personal best in the event.
There will be three Vaqueros in the finals of four events after the successful prelim day. Heckstall and Poston are joining Harris in the women's 60-meter dash final as the No. 2 and No. 8 qualifiers with times of 7.43 and 7.59, respectively. Heckstall tabbed a personal best in the 60 prelims, as did Lingueno and sophomore
Saniyah Richardson.
The men's 60-meter dash will also feature three Vaqueros. Sophomore
Richard Young led the UTRGV pack as the No. 3 qualifier in 6.75, winning his head ahead of senior
Corin Burns who got in with his time of 6.79 at eighth. Mascall was the sixth qualifier with a time of 6.77.
The same trio will compete together in the men's 200-meter dash final. In addition to Mascall's personal and program best, Young ran the No. 6 time in program history of 21.32 to advance as the fifth seed. Burns is eighth with his prelim time of 21.42.
Three Vaqueros women's 60-meter hurdlers advanced to finals. Freshman
Dior Williams moved on as the top time qualifier with a race of 8.50, which is 10
th in program history. Lingueno was fifth in prelims in 8.66 and sophomore
Trezur Connley ran 8.75 to take the eighth seed.
Senior
Daniel Siaffa made the final in the men's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.10, which is the seventh-fastest race in program history. He is the No. 5 time qualifier for Thursday's final.
UTRGV's mid-distance standouts will represent with three runners in the women's and men's mile races. Guerrero will join Anchike in the final of the women's mile. Guerrero ran 4:58.27 to advance as the No. 6 time qualifier and ran the No. 6 race in program history. Morales punched his ticket in the men's mile with the No. 8 time of 4:12.08, which is sixth-fastest in program history.

Treasure Vallerie and junior Brownsville Hanna alum
Alejandro Arellano will represent the Vaqueros in the women's and men's 400-meter dash finals, respectively. Vallerie ran 55.87 and was the No. 6 qualifier out of the women's race. Senior Brownsville Hanna alum
Aliyah Castillo tabbed a personal best 57.30 in the race, finishing 18
th. Arellano ran 48.17 in the men's race to move on from prelims as the sixth seed.

Elizabeth Hernandez opened the meet for the Vaqueros with a pair of UTRGV indoor record book entries in the women's 5,000-meter run. Cruz was 14
th with the No. 6 time (17:47.02) and Hernandez followed in 16
th in 18:06.29, the No. 8 time in program history.
The Vaqueros totaled 12 personal bests and made 16 entries into the program record books Wednesday. Action begins Thursday at 10:40 a.m. with field events and the track finals will start at 11:40 a.m. Fans can watch on ESPN+.
After Day 1, with six of 17 events scored, the men's team is in fifth place with 18 points and the women's team is sixth with 19 points.
